The dignified Red Deer, ever on the increase are majestic & wary. Elusive Roe Deer hard to see.
Wildlife on Skye in Scotland
All farmers & crofters curse the hungry Red Fox with its steely eyes at lambing time. Cunning but handsome!
Brown Hares & Rabbits frolic in the early mornings. (Scalpay, however, has no rabbits & few hares).
Rodents like Stoats & Weasels -are seen if you are lucky as well as Mink, the offspring from the old breeding farms causing havoc with breeding birds.
Voles & Shrews scurry along into their tunnels.

The occasional adder,but toads, frogs, newts, lizards, dragonflies, butterflies, huge slugs & furry caterpillars are readily seen.
On the shores all around Skye & Scalpay otters play in the kelp.
On the rocks, with their pups, both the grey & common seals can be seen napping & sunbathing!
A wide diversity of habitats can be found on Scalpay & Skye. Woodlands, dry heathland, wetlands, grassland, fresh water streams, lochs and the sea all provide a variety of locations where plants and animals can thrive.
