The Inverewe Gardens are well worth the trip especially in the spring & if you have the time; taking you through some of the most dramatic scenery of North West Scotland. Attadale Gardens near Loch Carron is of almost equal interest and is somewhat nearer.

The old drover’s road to Glenelg after Glen Shiel & the magnificent Five Sisters (where Jacobites fought hard in battle), will lead you to one of the last turntable car ferries over the sea to Skye. You must ensure that you include a visit to the ancient Pictish brochs before embarking!

A Jacobite steam engine runs from Fort William to Mallaig, a journey as famous as the Inverness to Kyle route; which is one of Michael Palin's "Great Train Journeys of the World". ‘Hogwarts Express’ of Harry Potter fame called at Glennfinnan Station, which is now The Steam Railway Museum.

‘The Road to the Isles' Fort William to Mallaig by car is as equally spoiling and by heading towards Skye via the Skye Bridge you will find the world famous Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie.

Plockton & Applecross are both picturesque villages that have first class seafood restaurants and are near enough to visit from Scalpay.

Through different aspects of Skye one could make excursions to both Armadale Castle (now mostly a ruin), the Gardens and The Museum of the Isles & Dunvegan Castle, seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, & its well-kept gardens. Portree, the capital of the island, has its pretty harbour and many little cafes, restaurants & outlets for locally made gifts.

Handmade chocolates from Isle of Skye Chocolate & handmade soaps from The Isle of Skye Soap Company are both worth looking for.

Catherine and Alex Shearer opened the award winning Skye Serpentarium Broadford 1991 where they house unwanted and illegally imported reptiles.

Especially suitable for children is The Brightwater Centre Kyleakin which offers an introduction to Gavin Maxwell. The Bella Jane & Misty Isle Boat Trips run boat trips from Elgol to the famous Loch Coruisk and its seal colonies. Seaprobe Atlantis Kyle is a Glass Bottom Boat with an underwater viewing gallery to explore the seabed below.

A walk or climb amongst the Cuillin, The Storr & The Quiraing very special indeed.
