Wildlife on Scalpay

A wide diversity of habitats can be found on Scalpay. Woodlands, dry heathland, wetlands, grassland, fresh water streams, lochs and the sea all provide a variety of locations where plants and animals can live.

Animal Species include:

Birds of Prey, Gulls, Terns Auks, Duck, Geese, Waders, Plovers, Owls. Flycatchers, Tits & Finches. Thrushes, Sparrows & Buntings, Crows & Ravens, Pigeons & Doves, Woodpeckers, Grouse, Larks. Warblers, Pipits & Wagtails. Red Deer, Long-tailed Field Mice, House Mice, Brown Rats, Short-tailed Voles, Weasels, Otters, Grey Seals, Stoats, Red Fox, Pipistrelle Bats, Common Shrew. Porpoises, dolphins and occasionally whales & killer whales.
