Arts & Crafts on the Isle of Skye
The arts & crafts in the Highlands are so rich in diversity & expertise & often inspired by ancient Celtic patterns such as can be found in nearby Skye Jewellery Broadford. The Scalpay Woodturners skilfully transform wood from windblown trees into beautiful bowls & works of art, bladesmith & goldsmith Rob Miller works with Garth Duncan from Castle Keep near Elgol, forging, casting & making leather & wooden scabbards and the Edinbane Pottery has built up a formidable reputation producing handmade woodfired & saltglazed ceramics inspired also by the colours & textures of sea & sky.
Skyeskyns, Waternish (a family business), make first class quality sheepskins. Shilasdair dyecraft Waternish use natural dyes from lichens & plants to dye their yarns.
Arts & Crafts on the Isle of Skye in Scotland
Painters & photographers delight in the challenges of the ever-changing light & landscapes. Galleries and craft workshops can be found all round the Island & throughout the Highlands. Our most local artist Duncan Currie works from the Broadford Gallery.
The Orbost Gallery near Dunvegan opened in 1977 to exhibit the works of professional painters and printmakers. Watercolours, calligraphy and prints by Marion Roberts and the wood engravings, of Paul Kershaw.
And then there is of course the art of making local whisky at Talisker Carbost & local ales such as Red Cuillin and Hebridean Gold at the Skye Brewery on the Uig, Pier!
